The production of paint and varnish materials in Russia in the first half of 2017 amounted to 714.6 thousand tons, which is 5.2 percent more than in the previous year. However, the volume of consumption in the first half of the year exceeded production and amounted to 798.6 thousand tons, an increase of 6.9 percent. Russian producers were able to close more than 80 percent of demand, while about 5 percent of Russian production was exported.
The growth of domestic consumption of paintwork was partially covered by imported products. Thus, imports to Russia in the first half of the year increased to 122,000 tons and occupied a market share of about 15 percent. The market is also growing in value terms due to higher prices.
In the market structure, almost two-thirds are based on polymers. According to the Association of Paint Quality, the share of decorative coatings of Russian production is 93 percent of total consumption.In addition, the market is actively moving towards the production of safer decorative materials, primarily construction. For consumers in this segment, it is especially important to use paint that does not contain hazardous substances.
